On August 27, 2025, during a back-to-school Mass at Annunciation Catholic School in Minneapolis, a gunman opened fire from outside the church. Two children, ages 8 and 10, were killed, and 17 others were injured, including 14 children, with at least two in critical condition. The suspect, identified as Robin Westman and described as being in his early 20s, died of a self-inflicted gunshot at the scene. Local, state, and federal officials responded quickly, with the FBI treating the attack as a domestic terrorism investigation.
The suspect opened fire with multiple weapons, including a rifle, shotgun, and pistol, shooting through stained-glass windows into the congregation. Two children were killed instantly, and 17 people were injured, the majority of them school-aged children. Emergency medical teams confirmed that several of the wounded remained in critical condition.
Authorities identified the shooter as Robin Westman, a man in his early 20s, with no significant prior criminal history. Investigators are reviewing a possible manifesto and online content believed to be linked to him, suggesting premeditation. Officials also reported the use of a smoke bomb and barricading of doors during the attack.
Federal, state, and local leaders issued statements of condolence. President Trump and Minnesota Governor Tim Walz directed flags to half-staff, while Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and members of Minnesota’s congressional delegation also addressed the tragedy publicly.
The FBI, ATF, and Minneapolis Police coordinated the response and investigation. Victims were transported to multiple hospitals, while the school and church were secured and evacuated. Reunification areas were established for families, and a separate, unrelated shooting at a nearby high school the day before heightened local concern.
