Incident: Idaho Firefighter Ambush – First Responder Targeted Attack
Date/Time: June 29–30, 2025
Location: Canfield Mountain area, Coeur d’Alene, Idaho
Target: Firefighters responding to a reported wildfire
Threat Type: Targeted Shooting / Tactical Ambush
On June 29, 2025, two firefighters were killed and a third wounded after responding to a reported wildfire in the Canfield Mountain area near Coeur d’Alene, Idaho. Upon arrival, the crew came under heavy gunfire in what officials believe was a premeditated ambush. The attack triggered an immediate shelter-in-place order for surrounding neighborhoods and a multi-agency manhunt. By the morning of June 30, the suspect was found dead. Investigators now believe the fire was intentionally set to lure first responders to the location.
The incident began as a fire dispatch. Upon arrival, first responders came under sustained gunfire. Two firefighters were killed, and a third was injured and transported for emergency medical care. Law enforcement quickly issued a shelter-in-place alert and launched a coordinated search using both ground and aerial resources.
The suspect was located deceased the next morning in a wooded area near the scene. The Kootenai County Coroner’s Office later confirmed the cause of death as suicide. Firearms and spent shell casings recovered at the scene confirmed the use of long guns in the attack.
Authorities have publicly stated that they believe the fire was intentionally set to bait responders. The FBI and other federal agencies are assisting in evidence analysis and motive confirmation. Idaho Governor Brad Little released a public statement condemning the attack as a “heinous, direct assault” on the state’s firefighting community.
This incident reflects an escalation in threats facing emergency personnel, particularly in rural environments with low visibility and difficult terrain. The deliberate use of a wildfire to lure responders signals a tactical manipulation of emergency protocols. One that bypasses traditional threat models focused solely on physical access points or civil unrest.
Security teams supporting private clients or infrastructure in rural or WUI zones must reassess both dispatch procedures and real-time intelligence capabilities. As attackers become more methodical and exploit situational predictability, first responder roles increasingly face risks once reserved for law enforcement or military personnel.
Security teams operating in rural, low-density, or fire-prone environments should implement the following measures:
