Thompson arrived at the Hilton Hotel shortly before 8:00 a.m. and was approached by Mangione, who opened fire at close range. Witnesses report that the shooter waited inside the lobby and targeted Thompson directly. Authorities recovered a concealed handgun used in the attack.
